New Delhi: India is witnessing an early onset of the southwest monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing multiple weather alerts across several states due to intense pre-monsoon showers. The unusual timing has brought both welcome relief from heat and weather-related disruptions in various regions.
According to IMD forecasts, Kerala has recorded an early arrival of the monsoon, while heavy rains have struck Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai, with forecasts indicating continued rainfall until May 24. The rainstorm has caused waterlogging and traffic issues in several urban streets. Meanwhile, Delhi is expected to experience rain and cooler temperatures on May 21, easing a prolonged heat wave spell.
In addition to the northern and western parts, southern states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala have also experienced strong showers and gusty winds. Meteorologists warn that these weather patterns may be linked to a developing cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea, which could intensify weather activity in the coming days.
While the rain offers relief to dry regions, authorities are advising caution, especially in small areas prone to flooding. Citizens are urged to follow IMD updates and local advisories.
